August: Osage County

Tracy Letts

At the end of one summer different generations of one big family are brought together by news that father has gone missing for mysterious reasons. Three grown-up daughters come home to their mother into a neglected Oklahoma country house with their husbands or partners. All of them arrive together with their own problems and secrets from their part, present and future which they have concealed for years but which they can no longer keep hidden during those critical days. A matriarch with a sharp tongue, her overbearing sister, and their children – we get an insight into intense relationships between generations and different marriages.

This play has been compared to Eugene O’Neill’s physiological drama Long Day’s Journey into Night. However, unlike this great play that has by now become an American classic, August is tragicomic. This bulky modern family drama has been acknowledged for being multi-layered, thrilling and topical. The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 and has already been stage in many countries.
