The Mountains

Tõnu Õnnepalu

This performance has one intermission and lasts 2 hours and 25 minutes.

Mountains are steep. Everything there is steep. Everything had only just been straightforward and crystal clear, the open spaces were endless, when suddenly everything was gone – only fog. One careless step and you yourself will be gone…Finding a point of support is a vital, physical question every moment in the mountains. One must cling fast to the earth in order to rise up into skies. But in life?

The Old Monk sits on a bench looking at the mountains. He doesn’t strive to go up or down. He himself is like the mountains. Does he know? Both the Boy and the Girl in their own way believe that he knows. In any case he is the only one here who listens to them besides the mountains. But does he understand them or is he judging them, or is he laughing at them instead? Or perhaps he is just as indifferent towards these questions and their love as those cliffs and that snow up there? Or altogether…
