The Hard Problem

Tom Stoppard

Do good unto others and they will do even better unto you. The world famous playwright’s new play (which premiered at the London National Theatre in January 2015) gives, in my opinion, ALL those who doubt in the value of modern life the recipe for overcoming their worries and problems. It presents simple questions and then answers them:
– If I help an elderly person across the street, am I doing an altruistic deed or am I being altruistically good?
– If I support a younger colleague, is it because I want something from him in the future or am I thinking about society at large?
– If a young mother breastfeeds her child, is she being sincere or soberly calculative and making sure that her gene kit reproduces?

The main question is whether you believe. That everything is material. Or that there’s something more to biochemistry. And whether there’s any point to believing and at what cost.
And the reality is that people still believe that all will go well, despite the proof otherwise.
And it will. There’s a happy ending.
