The Fog

Juha Jokela

Finnish scientists and businessmen find themselves in a jam when they try to do business with Russia. Their friendship between themselves and even Finnish values are put to the test. But these are recognisably questions that other countries also face, including Estonia. How appropriate is it to do business with a country that has just invaded Ukraine? To sell your awesome invention in medical technology for treating the soldiers of the invading army? On the one hand, a country that is under sanctions, on the other hand, terrific people when taken individually. On the one hand, the diplomatic interests of your country, on the other hand the business interests of your company.  The play was first staged at the Finnish National Theatre in the autumn of 2016. The critic Lauri Meri wrote in the Helsingin Sanomat that Jokela’s characters grope about as if they were in a thick fog, but the story unfolds to the audience like a clear autumn day – a little bit biting, like a comedy should be.

Juha Jokela (born in 1970) is known in Finland as a script writer of serials as well as a playwright. He is a contemporary author in the best sense of the word. His surprising humour, gripping stories, and characters rich in nuances aptly depict our contemporary time.
